BY PLANE – The main gateway to Romania is Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP), located about 30 minutes north of Bucharest’s city center. Direct flights connect Bucharest with major European hubs such as London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, and Vienna, as well as seasonal routes from the United States via major carriers. For the most seamless arrival, arrange a private transfer or hotel car service in advance — it’s a smooth, stress-free alternative to airport taxis, which can be inconsistent.

BY TRAIN – If you’re traveling through Eastern Europe, Bucharest is well connected by rail. Trains arrive at Gara de Nord, the city’s main station, from Budapest, Sofia, Belgrade, and Vienna, among others. While not the fastest option, train travel through Romania offers a scenic and comfortable way to experience the countryside. For added comfort, consider booking a first-class compartment.

The best times to visit Bucharest are May through June and September through October, when the weather is mild, the streets are lively, and the city feels at its best.

Autumn offers crisp air, golden leaves, and a softer pace that feels effortlessly romantic. I visited in October, and it was the ideal time: mild weather, fewer tourists, and the kind of cozy city atmosphere that makes evenings linger a little longer.

Summer can be hot and humid, with many locals leaving the city for the coast, while winter brings shorter days and a quieter rhythm — appealing if you enjoy off-season travel and festive markets.

How many days in Bucharest

Two to three days is the perfect amount of time to experience Bucharest at a relaxed, luxurious pace. The city is compact and easy to explore, allowing you to enjoy its cultural highlights, fine dining, and hidden corners without feeling rushed.

How to get around Bucharest

WALKING — Bucharest is a walkable city, especially around the central districts of Old Town, Calea Victoriei, and Cotroceni.

UBER — For longer distances or evenings out, Uber is the most reliable and comfortable option. It’s safe, affordable, and widely available throughout the city — a much better alternative to local taxis, which can be inconsistent with pricing.
