Where to stay in Vienna

Are you planning a trip to Vienna? Vienna is one of Europe’s most exciting cities, with a wealth of history and culture around every corner.

Vienna is a sprawling city; choosing the best area to stay can take time and effort. Fortunately, the city’s public transportation system makes exploring all of Vienna’s districts easy no matter where you stay.

Best areas to stay in Vienna

Vienna is divided into 23 districts, each with advantages and characteristics. There are plenty of great places to stay, depending on what kind of experience you’re after.

This guide will go through 7 best areas to stay in Vienna and the best accommodations they offer.

Innere Stadt (First District)

Best area to stay in Vienna for first-timers

If you’re looking for a luxurious experience, the elegant Innere Stadt district is where you’ll find some of the grandest Vienna hotels. Located right in the city center of Vienna, the streets are lined with stunning palaces and impressive buildings.

Innere Stadt is the main area around the District of the historic old town. This is where you can find St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Albertina, Haus der Musik, Hofburg (the old Habsburg residence), and the Rathaus, just to name a few well-known landmarks.

Historical fact: The entire district, Innere Stadt, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

This area has many hotels and apartments, but they can be more expensive than other parts of the city.

Whether you’re in Vienna for business or pleasure, the Park Hyatt Vienna is undoubtedly one of the most luxurious places to stay.

Leopoldstadt (Second District)

Best area to stay in Vienna for families

If you’re traveling as a family, Leopoldstadt is one of the best places to stay in Vienna!

Leopoldstadt is an island in the middle of the city connected via bridges and roads, so it’s easily accessible. Situated along the Danube Canal, this city area is incredibly scenic.

One of the most popular attractions in Leopoldstadt is the iconic Prater theme park. There are also lots of green spaces and restaurants where you can relax.

This area has plenty of budget-friendly hotels and apartments.

Luxury

If you’re looking for a luxury getaway, SO/Vienna is one of the best options! It was designed by a famous architect, so the interior is exquisite, and you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the city.

Budget

The Social Hub Vienna has a cozy lounge area, evening entertainment, and game tables. They offer budget-friendly options and expensive suites, so there’s something for everyone.

The hotel is next to Prater Amusement Park, and the rooms are spacious, modern, and soundproof.

Landstrasse (Third District)

Best area to stay in Vienna for budget travelers

Landstrasse is one of the best areas to stay in Vienna if you’re traveling on a budget. Even the luxury hotels in this area have some fantastic deals!

It’s less touristy than Innere Stadt and has a more relaxed vibe, so you’ll get a more local experience. Plenty of apartments exist in this area if you want to cook your own meals.

Another great thing about Landstrasse is the variety of attractions that you’ll find nearby. This includes Belvedere Palace, Kunst Haus Wien, and Hundertwasserhaus, one of Vienna’s most colorful Instagram spots.

Luxury

This is one of the best luxury options if you’re looking for the best hotels with a view of Vienna! Hilton Vienna Park offers unparalleled city views, gorgeous rooms, a great location, and fantastic facilities.

This 4-star hotel is just a 10-minute walk from the city center and boasts various excellent facilities, including a spa, restaurant, fitness center, and bar. You’ll also have plenty of attractions nearby!

Another great option is in Wieden, the 4th District. If you’re looking for a trendy, international district with a relaxed and youthful vibe but are okay with being next door to the 1st District, this is the place for you. It has a family-friendly environment during the day, though there’s still a vibrant scene with many local bars at night.

This is the place to stay in Vienna for the holidays. You’ll be within walking distance of all the famous Christmas markets and the famous Christmas shopping street!

Hotel Johann Strauss is located in a modern Art Nouveau building. If you stay here, you’ll be close to various attractions and a breakfast buffet.

Budget

This place is a great budget option, boasting a central location, cozy rooms, and a tasty buffet breakfast.

Margareten (Fifth District)

Best area to stay in Vienna for a central but cheap location

Margareten is a multicultural, multi-faceted district with plenty of great places to have lunch or dinner, hang out in cozy bars and cafés, and go shopping for vintage clothes.

You can explore the art galleries, shop at flea markets, and buy fresh produce from the farmer’s markets to cook yourself a nice meal afterward. Perfect for those staying in the city a little longer.

Luxury

Excellent location to access the city center and other incredible attractions. You’ll also benefit from an on-site spa and a bar.

With an on-site restaurant, bar, and airport shuttle service, this place has a lot to offer. There’s also a bicycle trail right outside the hotel.

Budget

Ibis Wien City is one of the best budget options in Margareten, with modern rooms and a fantastic location!

Mariahilf (Sixth District)

Best area to stay in Vienna for a local experience

Mariahilf has been a district since the 1800s, so it has plenty of history. Although it’s still within walking distance of the city center, it offers a relaxed atmosphere, rather than the hustle and bustle.

If you’re looking for a more authentic and local experience, Mariahilf is one of Vienna’s best places to stay.

It’s home to the famous shopping street Mariahilfer Strasse and the Naschmarkt, a large outdoor market. There are many mid-range hotels and apartments in this area.

Luxury

Hotel MOTTO is one of the best luxury options in the city, as the hotel’s interior design is gorgeous, as are the rooms. You will be in a great location and close to plenty of attractions.

Jaz in the City is one of the quirkiest hotels you’ll come across in Vienna, as it offers unique decor in each room. Some rooms here feature a private balcony and city views, and the facilities are fantastic.

Budget

This budget-friendly hotel offers a variety of cozy rooms, some of which even feature panoramic views of Vienna. There are plenty of facilities at this hotel, too, including a bar and restaurant and the hop-on-hop-off bus stop right outside.

Neubau (Seventh District)

Best area to stay in Vienna for culture

Last but not least on my list of best districts in Vienna is Neubau, the 7th District of Vienna and one of the more popular tourist places, and it’s home to the museum’s quarter, the famous Spittelberg Christmas Market, as well as many other sightseeing attractions.

The MuseumsQuartier is home to several notable museums, including the Leopold Museum, the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna, and a branch of the Kunsthalle Wien. Plus, there’s also ZOOM Kindermuseum for younger kids! If you’re looking for something to do at night, you’ll be happy to know that this area also has quite a few trendy cafes, restaurants, and shops.

Luxury

This 5-star hotel is located directly opposite the MuseumsQuartier and in a beautiful building. With an indoor swimming pool, an on-site spa, a restaurant, and a bar, there are so many fantastic facilities too.

Budget

This funky hotel offers a variety of unique (but gorgeous) rooms, and the hotel’s interior decor is incredible. This place has much to offer, boasting an on-site restaurant, bar, billiards tables, and a terrace area.

If you’re looking for spacious yet modern rooms, I’d recommend checking out this hotel. Not only are the rooms very budget-friendly, but you’ll find plenty of excellent attractions nearby.

Overall, Vienna is a safe and walkable city, and public transportation is efficient and easy to use, so you can easily explore the city from any area you choose to stay in.
