When is the best time to take photos in Budapest?
Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. And famous landmarks are busy all day. So if you want to get that clean shot, crowd-free, popular on Instagram, you should aim for early morning site visits.
The most beautiful Budapest Instagram spots
If you are in Budapest for a few days, consider downloading the map we have prepared above. This will help you to walk through the city, from one hot point to another, without getting lost.
Being one of the top cities in Europe, often compared to Paris for its beauty, Budapest has many inspiring photo spots. It is magical and photogenic.
In addition to the city’s landmarks, in this guide, you will also find some of the best rooftop views in Budapest. Those are the perfect observation spots to watch the city from a different angle.
Fisherman's Bastion
*the best viewpoint of Budapest
If I had to select just one location as the most picturesque place in Budapest for Instagram, my choice would undoubtedly be the enchanting Fisherman’s Bastion. This panoramic observation tower, situated on the Buda side of the city, is truly one of Budapest’s most stunning photo spots, offering an incredible 360 view over the city.
As one of the city’s most visited tourist spots, the Fisherman’s Bastion tends to get excessively crowded during the day. Therefore, I recommend going as early as possible! Watching the sunrise just before the Fisherman’s Bastion is a worthwhile experience. Waking up early allows you to have the place all to yourself, and the gentle morning light also makes it perfect for photography!
Matthias Church
The Matthias Church is practically integrated into the Fisherman’s Bastion, making exploring both attractions convenient in one visit. This historic church served as a coronation venue for Hungarian kings for centuries and remains one of Europe’s most unique churches today. Its grand size makes having a wide-angle lens a valuable asset for capturing its beauty without any hassle!
To avoid large crowds, arriving early in the morning is advisable. However, note that the church opens at 9 am (and 1 pm on Sundays). If you also plan to explore the interior, it’s best to time your visit around the opening hours.
Buda Castle
The Buda Castle holds immense historical significance in Hungary and is recognized as one of the most splendid castles in Europe. Once the residence of Hungarian kings for centuries, the castle no longer serves that function today.
The former castle houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. Even if you don’t plan on visiting the museums, it’s well worth taking a leisurely stroll around the castle grounds, as the view from up there is truly magnificent!
You can walk around Buda Castle any time, but remember that the museums only open at 10 am.
St. Stephen's Basilica
St. Stephen’s Basilica, the largest church in Budapest, is an essential stop on every Budapest itinerary. While it makes for a great photography subject from the outside, you can ascend to the Panorama lookout for even more breathtaking views! The Panoramic Terrace is a must-visit spot offering a 360-degree view of Budapest. It is the perfect observation deck over Budapest from the opposite side of Gellert Hill.
If you are in Budapest during November or December, take advantage of the Christmas market in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica. This market is considered one of the city’s finest, featuring a magical light show projected onto the Basilica.
The basilica is the tallest building in the city and one of the most impressive pieces of architecture and style. Early mornings are ideal for photographing the exterior without large crowds. Those interested in exploring the church’s interior can find the opening hours on the official website. However, the highlight of the Basilica is the Panorama lookout. The opening times for the Panorama lookout vary by season, so it’s recommended to check the official website in advance. During winter, you can catch a stunning sunset (and enjoy the Christmas market) from this viewpoint, making it one of the best things to do in Budapest in December.
The Hungarian Parliament
The Hungarian Parliament holds immense significance in Hungary and is one of the country’s most important landmarks. Soaring to a height of 96 meters (315 ft), it ranks as the third-largest parliament building globally.
Though the Hungarian Parliament building appears epic up close, one must cross the Danube River for the best photography spot. This viewpoint is situated on the Buda side of the river, offering a direct view of the Parliament building.
This viewpoint offers stunning vistas throughout the day, both in daylight and at night. Consider visiting during sunrise for exceptional shots as the sun rises behind the largest Parliament building. If you are okay with an early wake-up, sunrise presents an excellent opportunity for photography.
Széchenyi Chain Bridge
Nine bridges in the Hungarian Capital are crossing the Danube, linking the two sides, Buda and Pest, but the Széchenyi Chain Bridge has been recognized as the best bridge in Budapest. The Chain Bridge, as it is often called, it’s one of the well-known landmarks of Budapest. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is the first permanent bridge constructed over the Danube River in Budapest.
The Bridge crosses the Danube River from one side to another, offering a perfect view over the Hungarian Parliament. Széchenyi Chain Bridge it’s a beautiful short walk, perfect to snap a few photos of Budapest. Walking across this iconic bridge undoubtedly ranks among Budapest’s best things to do.
While you can visit any time, going early in the morning is recommended to avoid the crowds that typically gather during the day.
Liberty Bridge
Although the Széchenyi Chain Bridge is the most famous bridge in Budapest, exploring other bridges can be equally rewarding! The Liberty Bridge is a beautiful, distinctive structure with a striking green hue.
While you can capture some fantastic photos directly on the bridge itself, for the best viewpoint over the bridge, head to the entrance of the Gellért Hill Cave. This spot offers a magnificent vantage point, especially during the spring when the almond trees in front of the cave are in full bloom.
As the Liberty Bridge is often bustling with people and traffic, it’s advisable to go early in the morning to capture shots without the crowds. On the other hand, the Gellért Hill Cave viewpoint is not as popular, so you can visit it anytime!
Great Market Hall
The construction of the Great Market Hall dates back to 1897, making it the most splendid and expansive market hall in Budapest. Even if shopping isn’t your primary interest, taking a leisurely stroll around the hall to admire its magnificent architecture is well worth it!
You’ll discover a diverse array of shops within the hall, making it a perfect place for a quick bite or some people-watching.
The Great Market Hall is open every day from 6 am except on Sundays.
Heroes Square
Heroes Square is the largest and most significant square in Budapest. At the center of the square stands a statue of Archangel Gabriel, surrounded by statues of the seven chieftains of the Magyar tribes and other notable Hungarian national leaders on both sides.
Constructed in 1896, the monument was designed to commemorate Hungary’s 1000-year history.
If you desire a tranquil square, the only way to achieve it is by waking up early and heading there for sunrise. Otherwise, Heroes Square is typically bustling during the day, making it challenging to capture a decent shot.
Heroes Square is also a World Heritage Site of UNESCO.
Vajdahunyad Castle
Vajdahunyad Castle is a lesser-known gem in Budapest, but it’s definitely a place worth exploring! Nestled in the City Park, right next to the boating lake (transformed into an ice-skating rink in winter), this former castle now houses the Hungarian Agricultural Museum.
As Vajdahunyad Castle is less popular among tourists, you’ll likely find fewer crowds during the day. The castle courtyard is always open for visitors, but if you wish to explore the museum, it’s open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 am to 5 pm.
Széchenyi Thermal Bath
The Széchenyi Thermal Bath, with its iconic yellow building, is the most renowned and Instagram-worthy spot in Budapest.
Inside the Széchenyi Baths, you’ll find various indoor and outdoor pools. The outside pools, in particular, stand out as the most photogenic parts of the Széchenyi Baths.
While having the bath to yourself is practically impossible due to its popularity, arriving around opening time is advisable. The crowds tend to increase as the day progresses, so going early offers a more pleasant experience.
The Széchenyi Thermal Bath is the biggest in Budapest. With its perfect mix-match of cold and warm pools, steam rooms, and many other attractive facilities, it’s the ideal spot to relax after a long walk around the city.
Gellért Thermal Bath
While the Széchenyi Thermal Bath remains the most renowned one in Budapest, exploring other thermal baths can be a delightful experience. If you’re seeking the best Budapest Instagram spots, include the Gellért Thermal Bath on your list!
Ervin Szabó Library
For all the book lovers out there, this next Instagram-worthy spot in Budapest is a true gem. The Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library, formerly a palace and now a public library, is an absolute paradise for bookworms! Housed in the opulent 19th-century neo-baroque Wenckheim Palace, a day pass is required to enter, but it’s worth every penny. Capture the neo-baroque palace vibes from this sumptuous library and elevate your Instagram feed to the next level!
And while we’re on the subject of impressive libraries, take advantage of the Budapest University Library, an absolute must-visit! Not only is it a perfect subject for your photographs, but it’s also worth exploring to fully appreciate its grand and majestic beauty.
Budapest Eye & Danubius Fountain
The Budapest Eye serves as an exceptionally fantastic backdrop, not just for rooftop bars but also from the ground level! Additionally, right in front of the Budapest Eye, you’ll discover the stunning Danubius Fountain, providing an excellent opportunity to capture photos with both attractions in the frame.
Being the most popular area in Budapest for both locals and tourists, it tends to get quite crowded. To enjoy this place for yourself, consider visiting early in the morning!
New York Cafe Budapest
New York Cafe Budapest is undeniably one of the most exquisite cafes in Budapest, and its popularity among tourists is well-deserved. Stepping inside this establishment for the first time left me in awe; the entire ambiance resembled that of a royal fairytale castle. Undoubtedly, it’s one of the most Instagram-worthy spots in Budapest! Additionally, there is a hotel within the same building, and I highly recommend taking a stroll around it as it shares the same captivating beauty.
New York Cafe opens its doors from 8 am until 12 am, allowing for a visit at any time during the day. However, if you don’t plan to go for the opening time, I recommend reserving a table in advance to avoid queuing for hours.
Gellert Hill
**The highest point to photograph Budapest
Last but certainly, not least, we have Gellert Hill as one of the most Instagrammable places in Budapest. The panoramic view from the top of Gellert Hill will elevate your Instagram game. Capture breathtaking shots of the city, encompassing both the Buda and Pest sides, offering a comprehensive depiction of the capital city. For the most captivating photos, head to Gellert Hill during twilight hours, when the city’s lights begin to illuminate, creating a genuinely enchanting scenery.
Citadel
The Citadel, situated atop Gellért Hill, offers a breathtaking view of Budapest and is a must-visit even if you have just a weekend in the city. It’s an ideal addition to your itinerary!
I have yet to have a chance to do a classic Instagram photoshoot at the Citadel, but I can share some pre-Instagram photos to give you an idea of its beauty!
The Citadel is renowned for offering one of the most stunning sunset views in Budapest but be prepared for crowds during this time as it’s a popular spot for photography. Alternatively, sunrise is also a fantastic time to visit, and you’ll have the entire place to yourself.
Szimpla Kert Ruin Bar
Step into this extraordinary 24/7 pub, where the ambiance resembles a journey into the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland. Szimpla Kert’s peculiar charm permeates every corner, creating a harmonious blend that aligns seamlessly with its philosophy. For the best experience, consider visiting during the daytime, where you can savor a cup of coffee and take photos without any unwanted distractions. Alternatively, arriving early in the evening, before the crowds gather, allows you to capture the authentic atmosphere that defines Szimpla Kert.
High Note SkyBar
For the finest rooftop bars in Budapest, include the High Note SkyBar on your must-visit list! This rooftop bar, situated adjacent to St. Stephen’s Basilica, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Budapest.
The bar opens from 2 pm until midnight, allowing for a visit anytime during the day. However, as it tends to get crowded, especially around sunset, reserving a table in advance is advisable, especially if you plan to capture some photography.
Locals love this place as much as tourists. In 2016, Conde Nast named this one of the best rooftop bars in the world. The Bar is on the roof terrace of the Aria Hotel, one of the most luxurious in the Hungarian Capital.
360 Bar
360 Bar is a chic rooftop bar situated on Andrássy Avenue close to the Opera of Budapest. Open all year round, the view from this bar is magnificent every season, especially in winter when they set up igloos on the roof. It creates such a unique and delightful ambiance, don’t you think?
As this is a popular and trendy bar, I recommend reserving a table in advance. To make the most of your visit, I suggest arriving 1-2 hours before sunset so you can enjoy the cityscape in both daylight and during the magical sunset!
Intermezzo Roof Terrace
I love rooftop bars, and fortunately, Budapest boasts several excellent ones, including the Intermezzo Roof Terrace! The view from up there is delightful, providing a sweeping panoramic sight of Budapest.
You can admire prominent landmarks such as the Hungarian Parliament, St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Buda Castle, and the Budapest Eye from this vantage point. On clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of the Liberty Statue atop the Citadel!
During winter, the terrace features a charming addition—a small ice rink, making it a truly unique experience. Visiting the Intermezzo Roof Terrace is undoubtedly one of the best activities during Budapest winter!
The experience of watching the sunset from the roof terrace is truly magical, so I recommend visiting around sunset time for a memorable view.
Paris Court
The Paris Court is situated within the Palace of the Downtown Savings Bank, constructed in 1912. Recently renovated, it reopened its doors in 2019 as a luxurious hotel.
As soon as you step inside, you’ll be greeted by a stunning glass-domed passage, now serving as the hotel’s reception area. Adjacent to the lobby, there’s a small cafe where you can enjoy an afternoon coffee, but it’s optional. Even if you’re neither a guest of the hotel nor the cafe, you are welcome to take a leisurely stroll through the passage!
You can visit the Paris Court any time and stroll through the passage. While photography is allowed, tripods and professional photo shots are not.
