THE 15 BEST INSTAGRAM SPOTS IN LISBON, PORTUGAL

Lisbon is one of those rare cities that feels like it was designed for the lens. Between its pastel-hued buildings, intricate tilework, golden light, and sweeping views, Portugal’s coastal capital is a dream for content creators and casual photo lovers alike.

But when you only have a few days in town, it helps to know exactly where to go.

If your style leans more editorial than touristy, this curated list is for you. These are the most aesthetic and photogenic Instagram spots in Lisbon — from moody ruins to modern architecture. All beautiful Lisbon, and all worth the detour.

Here’s where to go (and when) to get the shot. I’ve included Google Maps links so you can easily pin these locations.

1. Elevador da Bica

A yellow vintage tram, a narrow cobblestone alley, and postcard-perfect angles.

This yellow tram is one of Lisbon’s most recognizable images. Head to the top of the hill in Bairro Alto for a cleaner composition with fewer crowds, and a view that rolls all the way down to the water. Time your visit before 10 am to catch soft light and an empty track.

2. Santa Luzia Viewpoint (Miradouro de Santa Luzia)

Arguably the most romantic view in Lisbon, and my personal favorite. Classic azulejos, pink bougainvillea, and a terracotta rooftop panorama over Alfama. Arrive early to catch the golden hour glow and soft morning stillness.

3. Praça do Comércio

Lisbon’s grandest square. The Arco da Rua Augusta provides a stately frame, and the open plaza gives clean, symmetrical shots. Visit just after sunrise for perfect light and minimal crowds.

4. Ler Devagar Bookstore (LX Factory)

If Wes Anderson designed a bookstore.

Inside an old printworks warehouse, this high-ceilinged bookstore is filled with floating bicycles, spiral staircases, and floor-to-ceiling shelves. Natural light floods in, making every corner photogenic. Best visited late morning or early afternoon when the sun is higher.

5. Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa)

An iconic Romanesque cathedral that’s best photographed from across the street just after sunrise. That’s when Tram 28 rolls past the front door — the classic Lisbon shot. The early light brings out the textures in the stone and adds contrast to the scene.

6. Pink Street (Rua Nova do Carvalho)

It’s quirky and colorful — and very popular. But truthfully? It’s not as pristine in real life. To avoid the late-night grime and party aftermath, go shortly after sunrise once the street’s been cleaned. You’ll get soft light and fewer distractions.

7. Green Street

Less famous than Pink Street, this quiet alley is covered in leafy vines and greenery. It’s a calming contrast, but plenty of charm. Early morning is ideal for soft light filtering through the trees.

8. Belém Tower

This 16th-century fortress sits right on the river and is stunning at golden hour. Shoot from the left to get the full tower framed against the water — or from the pier if you want something more symmetrical. Beautiful in late afternoon light.

9. MAAT Museum

Sleek, modern, and endlessly photogenic. The wave-like architecture makes for sculptural compositions, especially at golden hour. Frame the museum with the 25 de Abril Bridge in the background for a layered, cinematic shot.

While there, you can take beautiful photos of the 25 de Abril Bridge, which hugely resembles the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge.

10. São Jorge Castle

Up on the hill with panoramic views in every direction. The castle walls and peeking towers make the perfect foreground for wide cityscape shots. The light here is best right after opening hours or at sunset when the terracotta roofs glow.

11. Monument to the Discoveries

This dramatic stone ship sculpture is powerful in scale and design. Shoot from the base to capture its height, or step back across the street for the full view with the river. Works beautifully during blue hour or golden hour.

12. Jerónimos Monastery

One of the most intricate buildings in the city. The cloisters, in particular, offer quiet corners with stunning light and symmetry. Visit right at opening to get the golden tones on the limestone walls and empty arches for clean compositions.

13. Carmo Convent

Open-air arches and Gothic ruins in the middle of the city. There’s something very special about the light that streams through the roofless nave. No black-and-white shots here — let the sun do the storytelling.

14. National Tile Museum

An essential stop for any color lover. The walls are covered in centuries of tilework, and the natural light makes everything pop. Close-up detail shots work best here, especially near the long tiled panorama on the upper floor.

15. Rossio Train Station

One of Lisbon’s most underrated facades. Moorish arches, horseshoe doors, and all-white stonework make this station a quiet architectural gem. Shoot from across the plaza to get the full symmetry.
